About Ehud Grably's Resume

Ehud Grably | A Life of Artistic Passion and Resilience (1961–1994)

Ehud Grably was a prolific Israeli artist whose brief but impactful life was marked by an unwavering dedication to creative expression, spanning painting, illustration, and beyond. Born on October 13, 1961, in Haifa, Israel, Grably's journey into the arts began early and evolved through formal education, international experiences, and personal triumphs amid profound challenges. Below is a chronological overview of his life and career, highlighting key milestones that shaped his legacy as a painter who explored themes of the human emotion, identity, and mortality.

Early Life and Education (1961–1981): Grably's artistic inclinations emerged in his youth, leading him to pursue comprehensive studies in the visual arts. From 1977 to 1981, he attended the Neri Bloomfield Academy of Design & Education in Haifa, where he focused on etching, illustration, drawing, and animation. Concurrently, he studied photography at the Haifa Institute for Advanced Studies and the WIZO Haifa Academy of Design and Education (formerly known as WIZO Canada). His explorations extended to other creative fields, including cinematography, directing, playwriting, and mime, reflecting a multifaceted approach to artistry that would influence his later works.

Recognition and Further Training (1981–1986): In 1981, at the age of 20, Grably received the prestigious Haifa City Award for Young Artists, affirming his emerging talent. He continued honing his skills in 1982 by studying engraving and lithography at the Israel Painters and Sculptors Association in Tel Aviv. Scholarships played a pivotal role in his development. In 1983, he was awarded a creative scholarship from the Haifa-Bremen Cultural Foundation, followed by another from the Sharett America-Israel Cultural Foundation in 1984. These opportunities culminated in his studies at The Art Academy in Bremen, Germany, from 1985 to 1986, where he immersed himself in an international artistic environment.

Professional Milestones and International Sojourns (1988–1990): By 1988, Grably had been elected as a member of the Israeli Painters and Sculptors Association, solidifying his standing in the art community. That same year, he lived and worked at the International Artists' Colony in Paris, France, where he also edited and presented a weekly Hebrew radio program on Radio Com (94.8 FM). Upon returning to Israel in 1989–1990, he worked at Radio City and Kan Radio in Tel Aviv, blending his artistic pursuits with media. In 1990, he participated in the Haifa-Dusseldorf Artists' Exchange Program, living, working, and painting in Dusseldorf, Germany, which further enriched his global perspective.

Teaching and Health Struggles (1991–1994): In 1991, Grably took on the role of an art teacher at the Ha'Biluim School in Ramat Gan, Israel, sharing his knowledge with the next generation. Tragically, that same year, he was diagnosed with lymphoma cancer. Despite this devastating news, Grably's creative output remained prolific, he continued producing a significant body of work, demonstrating remarkable resilience. From 1992 to 1994, even as his health declined, he pursued his artistic passions relentlessly, creating pieces that delved into profound existential themes.

Legacy and Passing (1994): Ehud Grably passed away on September 5, 1994, on the eve of the Jewish New Year, at the age of 32 years and 11 months. Having painted for 23 years of his life, he left behind an enduring body of work that continues to inspire. His art, characterised by bold explorations of life’s complexities, reflects a spirit undimmed by adversity.

This timeline underscores Grably's commitment to art as a lifelong vocation, from his early training in Haifa to his international engagements and final creations. His story is one of talent recognised early, nurtured through scholarships and experiences abroad, and sustained through personal hardship, making him a poignant figure in Israeli art history.

Ehud Grably | Insights from His Resume

Ehud Grably's resume portrays him as a profoundly dedicated and versatile Israeli artist whose short life from 1961 to 1994 was defined by early talent, relentless creativity, and resilience in the face of adversity. Emerging from Haifa with a broad artistic foundation in etching, illustration, drawing, animation, photography, and even tangential fields such as cinematography and mime, Grably demonstrated a multifaceted approach to expression that transcended traditional painting. His early recognition, including his 1981 Haifa City Award for Young Artists at the age of twenty, underscores his precocious maturity and innovative spirit. International scholarships and residencies in Bremen, Paris, and Dusseldorf exposed Grably to Global influences, enriching his explorations of human emotion, identity, and mortality, themes that intensified during the time after his lymphoma diagnosis in 1991. Despite his health struggles, Grably remained prolific, teaching art and producing work until his death at the age of thirty two, leaving behind a legacy of over twenty three years of bold, existential late twentieth century art that blended personal turmoil with universal resonance.

Had Grably lived into 2026, at around age 64, his career trajectory would most probably have evolved into that of a Globally renowned figure in contemporary art, building on his early international sojourns and his media involvement (e.g., radio hosting in Paris and Tel Aviv). Grably would also most probably have expanded into digital media or interdisciplinary projects, given his curiosity and adaptability, potentially securing major exhibitions at institutions such as the MoMA or the Tate Modern, mentoring emerging artists through expanded teaching roles, and achieving the fame that he aspired to during his short life, perhaps through auctions at Sotheby's or Christie's, as envisioned in his legacy plans. Grably's themes of mortality and identity might have matured into commentary on modern issues such as technology and Global conflict, cementing him as a pivotal voice in Israeli and expressionist art history beginning in the late twentieth century.
